the o-ring on my distributor leaks like a sieve, and remembering someone say to get the brown one from GM i went to the pontiac dealer. the parts man spoke very indistinctly, and seemed confused, eventually allowing as how he had a listing for the entire distributor but nothing for the o-ring.

i went to the chevy dealer across town, and the young guy had the same problem, but the older guy went to the racks and returned with a little box full of brown o-rings, didnt even look them up.
$1.96 each, part # 10477565, description "seal".
i bought 2.

I don't know why they'd have all that grief. They're on the 2.8-3.4 Camaros, and probably the "older" parts guy knew it.

Got mine from a GM dealership, it was no big deal. Odd thing was he recommended the use of a very thin amount of RTV. Installed it without, since thats how it was from factory, and hasn't leaked yet.

The tan ring was invented by GM to replace the one on the oil pump drive for the DOHC 3.4, since replacing that O-ring requires a complete dismantling of the intake and cam system to get to the oil pump drive. The drive in those engines is essentially just the lower half of a 2.8 distributor.

Ouch! I can see it now: Mechanic holds up a $1 o-ring and says it will cost $1,800 to replace it.
