The V6 and 87-88 4 banger sending units have the pressure and return lines angled towards the passangers side of the car, and the 84-86 4 bangers have those lines angled towards the drivers side of the car.

Im not sure on the depth of the 87-88 sending units, if that different due to the larger tank.

The 87 & 88 sending units are interchangeable, the V-6 has an anti-pulse chamber in place of a direct hose connection at the fuel pump. (fuel pumps are the same size) The 85 & 86 V-6 units are the same (pulse chamber too I think) and I think that the 84 -86 4-cylinder units are interchangable.

anyone know what the difference is between the 85/86 and the 87/88 for the V6? or why they couldn't be interchanged?

When I put an 88 V-6 fuel pump in my 84 I found that the circular bracket that the fuel pump sits in was different and did not fit the rubber bumper on the bottom of the pump very well. I cut and filed a new one from 1/8" plate and silbrazed it on. I also had to solder the wires to the pump terminal as the 84 connector was different.
