The wiper switch is in the column, the stalk only plugs into it and doesn't have any other effect on the wipers. This could be a faulty switch or a faulty control board on the wiper motor if it has the variable speed wipers.

Try removing the cover on the wiper motor. Take the circuit board out and see if you see any obvious signs of arching. Put it back in and make sure it is seated good. Sometimes moisture works its way ito the housing and creates havoc. If the problem still persist, you probably have a bad circuit board. The switch in thh colum does not control the park function for the wipers. The circuit board does.
Good luck

Amen !!!! to that. Everytime I wash the front inside area, my wipers will operate independent of any switch setting for about a day. After drying, all is normal. I simply have to remove the fuse for a day or so. (it's bad when I forget to replace it, though should it start raining!)
IF you need a replacement wiper motor, you can use this list as guide. This list was previously posted by a PFF member so I can't take credit for it. 82-93----- S10, S15, Sonoma pickups 83-93----- S10 Blazer, S15 Jimmy 85-89----- Astro, Safari vans 84-88----- Fiero 82-84----- 2000 82-94----- Cavilier 82-83----- Cimarron 82-88----- Olds Firenza 82-89----- Skyhawk 85-94----- Sunbird
This suggests a problem with the motor. The intermittent wiper motor is a very common GM part and the post above me will help you out. Like the guy said, replacing the stalk won't usually fix a problem with the windshield wipers (though, I had a unique situation not to long ago where it actually did)

I would certainly try replacing the circuit board at the wiper motor first due to the ease of replacement, but I believe your problem to be in the wiper switch.....in the column. Hope I'm wrong because they're not much fun to install........lol.
