The car runs fine but the spedo started doing weird things....working than not working jumping around. The check enging was popping on and off. I pulled the cose when I got home, 24. VSS, What is it? Does it affect the driveability or is it just for the spedo. Where can I get this sensor? GM still make it? Is it normal for the spedo do jump around intermittently when this VSS is going bad?

Thanks
Mike

It might not be the sensor. Check the wiring and make sure the plug is seated fully. When mine was messed up (loose connection) it was running really rich. The sensor usually doesn't go bad that I've seen, just the wiring/connections.

Does your cruise work? The plug on mine wasn't seated tight at the speedometer. When I found the problem, the torque converter lockup began to work again, too.

The plug in question on mine was at the bottom of the speedometer.

The speed sensor itself is located on the transmission housing just above where the right side axle plugs into the tranny. It's a round metal can with a two wire plug in the top of it. Check the plug and the wires for condition and a good connection. The sending unit itself is a common GM part that is readily available.
