I had a 77 Chevy and the battery didn't tie down at all, just sat in the tray. I used bungee straps to hold it in place. Hooked one end in part of the frame/body, wrapped it around/over the battery, then connected the other end to part of the frame/body. I had one going around and one going over the top of the battery.

Kind of a half a$$ approach, but it worked well

I just picked up a set of J-bolts and a tie-down bar from the local autoshop for a couple of dollars.

I had a bad experience when my battery broke free from the stock mount, and shorted postive directly to ground on a hard right-turn. The engine instantly shut off, all guages pegged at max and my alternator was an instant boat anchor. I had to beat the battery off the rear deck-lid hinge with a stick (it had welded itself to the hinge mount) before the smoking wiring burst into flames.

Perhaps I shouldn't have taken on a Fiero that the original owner said he liked to work on, especially after it spent some time 'submerged'. At least the car was free.

My battery tray was tottaly rotten through so i relocated it in my trunk, it works, and looks good too, go to farm and fleet, they have universal battery mounts/holders. they work well, and while your at it buy a fire extinguisher!

If the threaded hole is stripped just drill it out and tap thread it to the next size and get a bigger bolt.
