Everything I've read (haynes, chilton's, online, here) states that the 2.5l engine takes 4 quarts of oil...I changed the oil, and put in 4 quarts..there's no oil leaks/burning, and yet the dipstick still shows about 1/2-3/4 quart low??? This was after changing the oil, and starting it up to circulate, then letting it drain down. This is on an 88, with the filter in the pan... any suggestions??

You have an 88 what should be the pan filter so that eliminates the question about using the longer filter like the 87 and older often have...

Exactly what do you mean by low?

Is it below the add mark? Or someplace between the add and full?

Dipsticks aren't exact. There is usually space between the specified level and the full mark. Anywhere between add and full is ok. 4 quarts should have you between the marks unless the engine has the wrong dipstick or dip tube. (Which I can assure you does happen.)

yep, the filter's in the pan..The oil shows on the crosshatched area, it's just about 1/4 of the way up on it..totally possible someone changed out the dipstick, and used the wrong one...I just get nervous about oil levels...but then, better to be a quartish low than a quartish over..I'm using Mobil 1 synthetic in it, and I know I added exactly 4 quarts, so I'll just get used to it not being at the top of the crosshatches, and make sure it's always where it is now..

Thanks, Ogre...love the cave too, btw

For a small bit... it could be that the stick or tube aren't all the way down. I don't have an 88 to look at so I can't tell you how far off if any that the stick may be. It doesn't sound very far out.

So you are between the marks but on the low side. It probably wouldn't hurt if you added a little but I wouldn't put in more than 1/3 to half a quart. and see where that gets you.

Some over fill won't hurt most engines. (Some engines easily take an extra quart but don't try that at home as they say.) As long as it doesn't start whipping the oil, which an 88 may do more easily due to the balance unit. If it were to whip the oil you'd likely see the oil pressure drop if it's doing it bad.

Being low is allot worse for most engines. Low can make it really easy for an engine to suck air when cornering or braking. (Low Automatic transmission fluid often does the same thing.) Any time you loose pressure is bad.

It doesn't hurt that the stick is off a little. I would probably add oil any time that stick says add it. The stick may have you a little over but as I said a little isn't a big deal. If you aren't comfortable, just add a half quart when it hits the add line.

Over filling an engine with oil can and will over time make the rear main leak.
