You da man!

Just make sure not to skimp on wiring. Get nothing smaller than 4 gauge wire to run to the engine from the front.

You should cut holes in the box, and turn the battery around.

This way you won't need to open the hood to jump it. Then again, crawling underneath would suck.

Looks nice.

If you are going to use the battery in that position... make/buy a strong cover that cannot be easily knocked off the positive terminal.

If you short the spare tire across the terminals there is a chance it could make the tire blow or start a fire. At the very least you could ruin both the tire and battery. A battery can dump hundreds of amps into short circuit.

Nicely done! I was going to make my own in my Welding class at the High School, but the semister is over and I did'nt get a chance to . Oh well, I might when/if my dad gets a welder. Nicely done though! Is that made out of just steel or what? Hot rolled or cold rolled?

I think this is a great Idea...
That way if you had a dead battery, you could just crawl under and be able to get into the fiero atleast! Gr8t idea, J!!

That is what I used. Very heavy, extremely low resistance. I have been running the car for about three weeks now. Not a problem at all.

Nice looking tray!!

nice job on the battery tray dave, looks like you're getting a lot of good use out of you're mig welder. i would just leave the battery in the tray like you have it. when i made mine last summer i originally tried turning it around with the terminals going through the side but with a insulator the battery terminals don't stick out very far on the other side and i did'nt like the idea of the terminals that close to a metal battery box, so i turned it around like you have in you're pic. i like how you did the hold down clamp, i just use the spare tire to hold mine in place. the tire is a little tight getting in and out but it does work. i just have the top 2 screws holding the tray in place and that has been working fine since last summer. here is a couple pic's

Thanks all for the comments. I've got some #2 welding wire to run the power to the back and yes, I will put the +ve cable in some sort of shielding to protect it.

The spare is not a problem as it will not fit up front anymore since I put Held's big brake master cyl in there so it goes in the trunk these days.

I did notice that my brake lines run under the center of the tub so I hope I can move them outa the way ok without too much trouble.

I made it outa 16 guage cold rolled steel. The welding you cannot see is pretty awfull but it is functional and I managed to give myself sunburn (again ) on my shoulder because it is so warm here right now I was only wearing a tank top while I was making it.

Tha bad news is the box is WAY too big. I made the sides 8 1/2 inches deep and it will not clear the torsion bar under the car so it is back to the drawing board
