I am putting my 88GT back togther and need to know how much oil needs to be in the compressor? I am converting over to 134A if that makes a difference. I need to do a little research if I will use PAG or Ester oil but I know ther eis a difference.

If the system is dry it will take 8 oz of either PAG or POE oil. GM's recommendation is PAG but if any mineral oil is left in the sytem it's better to use POE. It's all explained here: http://www.babcox.com/editorial/us/us29928.htm.

How mich of the oil goes in the compressor? From what that artilce says PAG is the way GM recommends you go when converting.

If you use PAG, be sure to flush the system, replace the receiver/dryer and drain the compressor. The compressor has to be removed and stood on-end to drain (don't flush the compressor). I don't think the amount of oil is critical, just put in approximately the amount drained out. Put the remaining oil in the receiver/dryer, condenser, evaporator and lines if possible. Be careful not to get PAG oil on your skin. Best to wear neoprene gloves when handling PAG.

The above link has some good info on A/C stuff. I believe it said in there somewhere to put about half the oil in the compressor and half in the accumulator drier.

The shop manual says....
New 525 viscosity refrigerant oil must be added
to the system when components are replaced, as
follows....

* All Compressors
- If less then 1 oz is drained - add 2 oz
- If more then 1 oz is drained - add same amount

* Accumulator
- Add 3.5oz to new accumulator

* Evaporator
- Add 3 oz oil.

* Condensor
- Add 1 oz oil.

-----------------------------------------------
* HR-6 Compressor System - Requires 8 oz of 525
viscosity refrigerant oil.

The numbers given in the instructions add up to more
then the 8oz. I would add 8oz to the system and in
the approx porportions listed above. If you are just
doing the compressor, I would see how much you can
drian out the old one and add the same amount or alittle
more back. Hope this helps.
