My cat has gone bad, right now I have the pipe open where the cat used to be until I can get a new pipe welded in it's place. Is is safe for the 2.8 to run like this or am I going to burn something out? I wish it was legal to be this loud, the engine sounds great running with no muffler. Any help would be great thanks.

I've heard it's bad for the valves, but I think you'll hear from people on both sides of that coin. I had an 89 oldsmobile and the cat rusted and fell off one day. I drove it without exhaust for several months before getting it fixed. I'm sure my neighbors loved that one...nice and loud. Anyway, it ran fine.

you are likely directing hot exhaust on the starter and a bunch of other things that should never be allowed to get hot.....

you need to get that piped properly. before you end up with a nasty mess if you don't already have one.

Since it doesn't have enough pipe before the cold air gets to the valves, your (hot) exhaust valves may be hit with cold air before they are cooled, warping them over time.

If your cat is off, get yourself a section of pipe the right diameter/length (this will require measuring) and head off to one of the many auto part stores. If it's just the straight section, then a length of pipe and two exhaust clamps will do. It it's cut really high up (you need to bend) it will require a bit of planning, but dealers sell bent pipes as well. That will buy you all the time you need before you get a more permanent solution. With my cat cut off, the straight section of pipe ran me $4.50 and two bucks for clamps.
