My '86 has a tilt steering colum, it works, but I can move the colum to the left abit also, I can see it is pivoting where the steering colum tilts. Would there be a bolt there that has come loose or is it something major?

thats what i used. be prepared to spend an afternoon on this.

you will need a steering wheel puller, locking plate remover, pivot pin puller, a few screwdrivers and some torx keys/sockets

go slowly and makesure you see how everything is put together because it can be very tedious putting it back together.

good luck,
Steve

You say there that you have do do that to fix a loose tilt mechanism. Is that what is wrong here? The tilt works fine, and everything, but you gan take the steering wheel and move it from center to the left about 1", and it pivots right where the tilt pivots. It does not move to the right at all.

How long did it take to do all that, it looks like you need alot of patience.

It will have to wait until spring anyway, dont want to do that when it is -20ºC out .

Thanks for the info +

Whats wrong is theres 4 bolts that loosen up from road vibrations and such. and they hold the tilt mechanism to the column. My tilt still worked, but i could also move the column around. i could go about 1" in any direction. The bolts on mine were just sitting in the holes. Dont let it get that bad, you dont want the column coming apart while youre going 60mph down the freeway.

When i did mine, it took about 4 hours on and off since we had to run back and forth to the parts store. It isnt really that hard, just a pain in the @$$. If you go slowly and use those pictures, it helps alot.
