I'm going to be doing a brake upgrade requiring the front rotors to be turned down. Probably the 11.25 in front cause I got 2 lebaron rotors already, and then the grand am in the rear.

As I was checking the fitment on the rear, I noticed the 'hub' isn't a snug fit. It seems the rear rotor is aligned by the lugs, seats itself firmly back against the hub, and held in place once the wheel and lugs are centered then tightened.

Now for the front, my question is how come can't just machine off the brake disc infront until it fits inside the new disc? I read the articles, and says it needs a certain clearance (.125" maybe???). Why is it that if it stays aligned by the lugs, pressed against the hub, and held in place by the wheel/lug nuts that it has to be so precise?

The problem with that is it has to be true while turning in other words it must be supported in the center. The holes for the studs are not true and has play where no matter how you tighten the lugs the rotor is going to move with weight and inertia acting on them and will cause shaking and imbalance so fitment is critical.

Ahh... Ok. I figured there would be a reason, and it makes sense, I was just curious what that reason was. Thanks man!

Jncomutt,

Are you going to document the build?

Can we say pictures?

Good luck.

hehe.. Hey man. I collected some parts and they're sitting in my basement, but haven't gotten around to the intall yet. My parts are elcheapo Junk yard parts that I got for next to nothing. I'm not sure how well the rotors will be, I'm going to get them turned, but they will need replaced regardless. Also the rear caddy calipers that I have look a little weathered as well, but I'm going to disassemble and see what I can do to clean them up. I paid $50 for 2 rotors and both cady calipers (as well as some other small things I got at the same time, dont remember what, switches, and stuff like that). I plan on purchasing the front calipers and rotors new, which I still have to do.

I've been busy working on building up the 3400, workin on my carb 2.8, and building this turbo system in my 86 to worry about that project lately. I've thinned out my resources (read: time & money) to the point that its slowing everything down. I dont' really find much time with this stuff due to school actually starting to get indepth again. In due time, hopefully everything comes together in spring.

At least I got the turbo going!!! brrm PSShhuuu
