I have recently aquired another 87 GT automatic and I want to mate it to a 4 speed. I found an 84 2m4 locally with the 4 speed manual in it, can they be swapped or do I need to find a newer car to rob the manual from?

Nope, the 4spd will bolt right in. I had an 87GT and did the same. Beware, you prob have one that is 4:10 ratio which will give you high rpm. 60=3k rpm 75=3750 rpm etc

Go here to see the ratios, http://www.captfiero.com/transratios.htm

If you can get the whole 84 you will be good to go. That is how I did my swap. When you have the hole donar car to swap out you will have all the little parts that you need. Hoses, brackets, Slave and Master. The only part you will need to find is a Slave Cylnder bracket as the factory 84 wont work on a V6 as it interfers with the Exhaust y-pipe. As for ratios you will either get great acceleration or great gas milage depending on the tranny you get. I had the 3.32 from an 84 and got over 30mpg and a 60mph cruisng of 2000rpms. Do the math 180mph at 6000 if you could ever make enough power.

Thanks for the responses.

Yeah, I can get the whole car, actually thats the only way I can get it. All or nothing. Is there anyway to tell before I start the swap which gearing it has?

Look at the RPO sticker in the front compartment on the dr side wheel well.
The 84 4 speed tranny will show as one of these:
MY8 3:32 econo
M19 4:10 regular

Odds are that it is a 4:10. Lots of acceleration.

Judging by the rims, it's a base model.

Can I expect improved performance over my auto with either trans.?

Will the dash interchange with an 87?
