I thought I had a vacuum leak. cold start idles at 1500 until warmed up then idles at 1k and fluctuates between 900-1200.

Replaced vacuum lines tonight with rodneys stainless steel ones. idle stayed the same. However there is a wierd noise that corresponds with the idle speed.

facing the engine from the back on the upper right hand corner of the plenum right near the firewall there is a sound. it idles steady for a while then you hear "click" imediated followed by a "pffsshht".
The idle changes right as it clicks. Anyone have any ideas? it was kind of dark and couldnt get a good look to know whats in that area. Anyone know what components are in that vacinity?

Thanks for any help guys!

P.S. How long would it take a first timer to do a tune up on the car? like adjust timing, change spark plugs and such? I dont understand how you change the plugs on the far side of the engine near the firewall. real tight squeeze.

Did you have your defroster or AC on at the time?

I changed my vacumn lines also but I did not come across any problems afterward. And I also have a GT! You did cross your "t's" and dot your "I's" - right?

As for changing spark plugs, etc. Its real easy since you are doing this for the 1st time my suggestion is mark the bolts, etc and remove the decklid. Most of us can do it under 5 mins and I don't mind doing it cause it gives me a chance to do many things without wasting time.

If the car runs "normal" with the AC or defroster off, you may need to check the charge of the refrigerant or your AC compressor is going bad. When the compressor is on it will affect the engine rpms because it puts a load on the engine. The ECM will try to compensate by raising the rpms of the engine. If you don't have enough refrigerant, the compressor will either not run or it will cycle on/off constanly. If it has too much of a charge, it will have difficuty pumping the refrigerant and will put an extra load on the engine. The bearings going bad on the compressor can also increase the load on the engine. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys. I always have the AC on at minimum setting becuase the button is broken to turn it back on. I'll turn it off and see how that goes. Also could a dirty air filter or bad O2 sensors cause these problems? My car is running really rich with a puff of white smoke upon startup. I know it needs a new air filter but I dont know if that would cause these other issues.

I figure the clicking noise I am hearing is the EGR selenoid but I dont think thats the problem.

Sounds like the AC Compressor cycling on and off like others have mentioned. When I have the AC on it does the same clicking noise and change in engine behavior - though nothing too noticable - mainly a loss in power while driving

I doubt that you would actually hear the EGR solenoid clicking. Besides the EGR is supposed to be inoperative at idle.
