Hi everyone. Time once again to "ask the experts!" 1987 Iron Duke with a 5 speed Isuzu. I need to replace the engine and transmission mounts. The car is in the tranny shop getting the clutch replaced, flywheel resurfaced and other small things repaired on the transmission. After a $1200 bill, the tech said the engine and transmission mounts are worn and should be replaced. I suspected some were as I keep hearing and feeling a thumping sound coming from the rear of the car when I apply torque on the engine from a dead stop up through shifting to third gear. I am thinking I can replace these myself. Is this job as straightforward as it seems to replace the mounts without removing the engine and transmission? I have a nice flat garage, floor jack and jack stands and pretty much most all tools. Does anyone have any tips or ideas or links to the procedure to help me change these mounts?

Thanks so much!
Paul

It's not a difficult job.... Go for it!
Do the right side, (Eng.), 1st, then the 2 trans mounts. Just be very careful under the car. Make sure it's properly supported cause you're going to be pushing and pulling it in every direction.
Good Luck, Kevin

The trunk side trans mount needs to be loosened. Then remove the bracket to the trans. They won't come out together and the trans bracket needs to be removed to get the mount out. The other 2 mounts are easier. I would do the hard one first. With the mounts being worn, It's easier to shift the engine/trans around to get the hard one out/in.
I've done 6-cyl and 4-cyl cars and I've always done the trans mounts first.

Finally, don't use the front pulley to raise the engine to change the mount. I used a piece of wood with a "U" cut out of it and lifted the front of the engine by the block.

if its in the shop getting a clutch put in, Have them do it. They should have the cradle already out of the car. if they charge you anymore than $20 plus the cost of parts, slap them.

You may even get it done for no labor since your bill is already at $1200.

Some problems I am encountering...I bought the engine mount, 2 transmission mounts and the "ultimate dog bone" from the Fiero Store. #1. Upon replacing the motor mount, the two lower studs on the mount were not positioned correctly to allow them to drop into the holes on the cradle. Its like they were closer together. I drilled out the holes in the cradle one size larger and the mount fit. I can live with that. #2. On the rear tranny, the new mount fits the holes correctly but the mount bracket will not align correctly with the holes in the transmission housing. It seems like the angle on the mount is different from the original. #3. The forward tranny mount when installed, seems to raise the mount bracket about 1.5 to 1.3/4"...not even close to the bracket holes on the transmission.

The mounts I got from the Fiero Store are all very hard riggid plastic material and the original mounts are hard rubber. The two tranny mounts (originals) were very worn and the forward one was as flat as an Aunt Jemima pancake. Would this cause the tramsmission to settle into a new position and would I need to jack and lever the tranny to get it to align with the holes on the brackets? Would raising the tranny 1.5 to 1.75" harm anything? Has anyone used the Fiero Store mounts, pros/cons with them?

Lastly, (the original tranny mounts are still in) I cannot get the new engine torque strut back in its mounts. (its the exact same size as the original one) I realize I need to pull the engine back, but hard as I try I cannot pull it back far enough to get the bolt in. Do I need to loosen the tranny and engine mounts to get the extra play needed to secure the strut and then go back and tighten the mount nuts?

Thanks for all your help!
Paul

have all of the bolts in the brackets but just a turn loose.
have the big nuts on the mounts a few turns on but not tight so you can move everything around.
get your dog bone bolts in
and now tighten everything up.
