my 88 with 128k has started to deteriorate slowly. now the steering very scarily drifts around when on the highway. even with the steering wheel str8. not the typical alignment drift, but more like a jump. might it be the tie-rods or ball joints. any help would be appreciated. ALSO, is it ok to just rebuild my rack and pinion as opposed to buying a reman?

My 88 did the same thing. I replaced both lower ball joints and it took care of my problems. I went and bought new ones and put them in and it is fine now.

Good Luck.

I'd have to agree with Korey , sounds like you need to change out the ball joints .

After having 3 different Fieros with well over 100k miles, my experience is it's a combination of stuff such as worn ball joints, tie rod ends, control arm bushings, and even wheel bearings. There is a nylon bushing on the passenger side of the rack that often gets trashed too. Plus, those racks do wear out over time too. Struts/shocks and tires can contribute to poor handling more than some realize. It's a snowball effect. If you want the car to handle like new, you need to rebuild and restore the whole suspension and steering system.

That's exactly it. So far I've replaced my upper and lower control arms, all six ball joints, motor and tranny mounts. Later this year I plan on changing out the Tierods and ends with a new steering rack. My steering was really scary on the highway at around 60mph on left turns. The whole car would twist. After I got new ball joints that went away.
