My 88 GT has a problem. When you drive it over imperfections on the road or turn on rough roads there is a bumping or knocking coming through the steering wheel. I had my wife turn the steering wheel while I looked under it, I heard bumping and knocking but saw nothing. The boot on the rack on the passenger side is busted and it has a small amount of play in it. I think there is more to the problem. Is there a bushing (other than the ones for the two arms) for the shaft that runs from the steering wheel to the rack. Also is there any adjustments that can be made to tighten up

The only bushing I know of is the one Rodney sells for the passenger side of the rack. You may want to check the pinion bearing for damage. Since you have a busted rack bellow, water/moisture will enter the rack and rust can form. I had water enter my steering rack and didn't know about it until my car started wandering one day. I got home and pulled the dust cap off the front of the rack and water poured out, along with little balls from the bearing. As far as adjustments, you can adjust the preload on the pinion with the large nut that's above it.

Not being there to see it I'll have to assume you have found the source of the problem.

If it is the rack you have to remove and rebuild it most likely. The bushings inside are nylon and if they have endured punishment for any length of time it's shot. You can swap it for a rebuilt unit from the Fiero Store or do the job yourself. The parts are still available through the dealer network. The bushing is about $15.

Personally, I just spend the money on the rebuilt unit. Some special tools are needed otherwise.

Replacing the rack is not a real big job. I found out that it is much easier to work on it from the top by taking out the plastic tub that holds the spare tire. The biggest pain is connecting it back on the steering column. It is a piece of cake from above.

Before you go to a lot of trouble, check two things...

1. Check the nuts that hold the upper control arms to the shafts. If they are even a little bit loose, it will make the front end rattle when you go over bumps.
2. Check the bolts that hold the upper control arm shaft to the frame. The holes in the frame are slotted to allow for front end alignment. If the bolts get loose, it will allow the U.C.A. shaft to "walk around". It will sound like the entire front end is falling apart. It will be most noticeable when you change direction (forward to reverse or vice versa) get up a little bit of momentum and then hit the brakes. You'll feel the thump.
I've had at least one of these situations on both of my 88s.
