I agree... Go to a paint and body supply house... They can mix up spray bombs for you, though it IS more expensive. This will FAR exceed the durability of the cheapo stuff, plus you can get it in any color you want that they have a formula for...

I have had very good luck with a can spray paint called SEM. It is good stuff. I think it is about $8.00 or $9.00 a can. I too am currently changing the color of my 88
GT from a very ugly brown to black.

That is one of my summer projects. I planned to buy SEM paint/primer. To those painting their interiors black, do you have grey interiors? How would it look to have the light grey fabric and leathers and black trim (and top of door sills)?

Make sure you clean the parts thoroughly. Any trace of silicon from products like Armor All will ruin the finish. You first need to clean the surface with 3M Plastic Prep. This will not harm the plastic by adding solvents. You will then need a plastic adhesion promoter. After that, you can look for paint.

I don't buy into those "Specialized Preps" even though, I'm quite sure they work well. The way I've always done it is to wash the parts down with good, old fashioned soap and water (light on the soap) with a dish scrubbing brush. Let dry and wipe down with acetone for surface prep, then shoot when ready. Has always worked VERY well for me and far less expensive all the way around. Go easy on the acetone though.

I have used the SEM and the Dupli color and they both worked great. I degreased, rinsed, and used a very fine sandpaper to allow it to penetrate. Worked great, it was a 81 malibu dash, that still looks like its new!!!

Yup thats wat I do! I use whatever general purpose cleaner i have on hand though. I also use Greased Lightning after I clean it to remove and left over grease and oils. Then I scuff it with a scotch brite pad and wip it down with acetone right before painting.I use duplicolor and molecubond vinyl paints.

I just bought a bottle of acetone to clean interior parts pryer to painting. Be very carefull this stuff will melt the plastic parts very easy. I would probly not suggest it.

I used rubbing alcohol on mine, and I also used Dupli-Color fabric and vinyl spray! If you want pics just PM me and I can send you some.
