I'm almost finished building a 85GT convertible with an old (and discontinued)California Convertible kit. It's a pretty involved job. Before you cut the roof off, YOU MUST add a subframe which ties together the front frame members with the rear frame members. My frame starts at the front cross member and attaches there in a V pattern then moves back to the front frame rails, and runs under the car to connect to the rear frame members where the cradle mount attaches. You'll need to build this frame from 1" x 2" x 1/8" wall steel tubing. If you can pick up I have some of this material that I can sell you inexpensively. Otherwise try a local steel supply house.

A more factory look for the bracing takes a bit of work. I spoke to a automotive engineer on this matter at length and basically this was what I was told to do.
Reinforce the shaded area of the car with 3mm thick plate steel. Internally or externally, doesn't matter. For added strength you can also plate the trans tunnel. Look at a factory convertible. You wont find box tube running everywhere under the car.

Umm, if you do use the cross braces underneath the gas tank, please put in a brand new gas tank, new fuel pump, and all related tank items, cause they are a pain to get out in the future, even if you could get them out, it's near impossible, so please replace all those related items.
