i was wondering where i could read up on doing a tranny swap from an auto, to a 5 spd, on a 1984. i guess a 4 speed stick would be ok too. did the 84 Fiero come with an optional 5 Speed tranny?

im picking up my 84 Fiero Tomorrow, just needs a little work, and its dirt cheap. plus, i Love Fiero's, always have, cant wait to get it. Selling my 99 Acura 1.6EL for this 1984 Fiero.

thanks for the help

Welcome!

84 did not come with a 5 speed, just the 3 speed AT or one of two ratio 4 speeds.

Basically, you will need the transmission, half shafts (maybe just the right side), shifter assemby (between the seats), the two shifter cables, the clutch assembly, clutch master and slave cylinders, lines, and possibly a new PROM for your ECM. You will also need to disable the key lock in the column that prevents the key from being removed when not in Park and rewire the reverse lights. Your best bet is to find a junked car with a good MT and strip it of the parts you need.

85-88 4 cylinders all used the same 5 speed, made by Isuzu.

Edit: There are basically three ways to get the transmission out.

1) Pull the motor/tranny out the top with a engine lift.
2) Jack the car up and pull the cradle.
3) Tilt the cradle down and wiggle the tranny out the wheel well.

This is a big project, you should have very excellent mechanical skills before you attempt this.
