I can pick up the complete car (automatic) for $300. The engine has 97,000 miles on the engine. Is it worth it. Is this a series I 3800 or an engine not even worth considering?

An 87 would be a 3.8 I believe, it is not a Gen I. If I recall correct the HP would be 160 or so....that is a 20 HP advantage over the 2.8 Now is a motor swap worth 20 HP? Not to me.

I think that will be a 3.8, basically what the 3800 evolved from. It's a good motor and probably a worthy swap if you can get the whole donor car or at least everything you need cheap enough... but the 3800 is still a little better.

But the torque would be much better. Torque rules, not HP. Still, Hank is right, it's not a series 1.

i had a free one sitting right in front of me. After doing some researching i found that with all the work involved it wasnt really worth it. You can usually pick up Cadillac 4.9s for around 500 and itll take the same amount of work to install and have greater increase in hp and torque and would probably end up costing the sameamount of $$$ in the end

Thats a 3.8 not a 3800 series I engine. that engine only puts out about 10 HP more then the stock Fiero 2.8....140hp on 2.8....150hp on 1987 3.8. Not worth all the work of re-wiring, custom brackets etc..

p.s. I thought you were going to buy P.R.'s (Black 84 convt. to V6)Fiero from him for your wife...?

YEAH KEV !!!!!!! YOU WIN THE TROPHY !!!!!!

Yep, stay away from this engine. It's a 3.8 engine code 3, not even a 3800. Only 150HP, but alot more torque. Not a good engine, plagued by timing gear oil pump probs. Stay far away!

Had a huge hunch it was a "3.8L" and not a 3800. Thanks for the input and confirmation, though.
