I got into my car today I had been driving it all day and it was fine. The shifter was all wobly and I went to shift it into reverse and it went forward. I soon noticed that all I had was 3rd and 4th gear. Luckily I was only 30 seconds from home I was able to push it into the road and ride 3rd home. Anybody know what happened and if so how to fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -Brian

Pop the cover on the shifter and take a peek. It's either that or the clutch peddal or the slave sylender.

Select cable broke or the shifter frame cracked.
Pull shifter cover and take a look inside.

If you're lucky it's just the selector cable or the shifter is broken (not uncommon)or the shift fork inside the tranny has worn out. Observe the cable while someone goes thru the gears. If the selector cable is moving then it is inside the tranny. Good luck!

A similar thing happened to my buddy with his 85 SE and it turned out to be the shifter cable. He tracked one down at a wrecker and got it in within a few days. I can't remember how long it took him to change though....

good luck and keep us posted on how it goes

Another possibility: Cable retainer clip popped loose at the bracket over the trans. Seen it happen a couple of times, in both cases the clip popped loose, fell down on top of the trans without bouncing off and onto the road and lost forever. Lucky and lucky ... may you be so lucky!
