I have an '85 GT with a 3.1 5 speed. My friend that I purchased the car from had already added a Design 1 turbo. Although the car runs great and is pretty quick, I am having amazing problems keeping the exhaust together. First of all the hangers have to hang from the chassis and the exhaust is too short to have any flex when the motor moves. I started breaking hangers and then I broke the $500 cross-over pipe that the turbo bolts to. After a not-so-good looking (but functional) repair to the cross-over I keep breaking the hangers that are attached to the exhaust tips. I am tired of this little problem "NAGGING" me all of the time. Does anyone have any ideas to fix it for good? ( I really don't want to remove the turbo)
Thanks all

Did you replace ALL your mounts and dogbone with new ones, prior to adding the turbo, to keep the engine from moving as much? sounds like a broken mount to me..just a thought

Poly mounts everywhere. Too bad you just replaced them all. That would definitely limit engine travel under accel and decel. G/L!

Sounds like you need a universal stainless steel exhaust flex joint; very similar to what a lot of the imports use but bigger and better. NAPA can "special order" them in sizes up to 4" ID I think. I bought a 2.5" ID one for less than $50 retail P/N FT250N8 which consisted of approx 4" of flexible joint externally reiforced with steel braid (all stainless), plus 2.5" ID nipples welded on to it that would slip over existing 2.5" OD tubing and could be welded or clamped.

Very nice piece and works very well. I am sure it will last at least the rest of the life of the car. looks just like the one pictured below:
