Well going down the road today my vibration damper, behind the crank pulley fell off. I had to drive the car like that for 50 miles. Talk about a awefull noise. I dont think I did any engine damage, but whats it going to take to put that back on? It is just free spinning behind the crank pulley. PLEASE dont tell me I have to pull the crank....
Any help would be great. Thanks!

You have to replace the balancer assembly. You can't readily put the ring back on. In fact, you can't put it back on and have it stay.

No, you don't have to pull the crank. You have to remove the pulley, remove the HUGE bolt and with a puller, remove the balancer.

If you need another dampner-I have one for 10+shipping.
I've never heard of one popping off...usually they are a pian to remove w/ puller.

Nasty, what shape is your balancer/damper in? What was the mileage on the car? I might be interested in that.....

I'v had that happen twice. on the first car got no dammage had to drive it about 30 miles. On the second car I drove it like that for about 20 miles and developed a knock. Could have been that little extra it needed to go anyway. Always think safety when you have the car lifted. Remove the rear tire and the inner fender. You will also need a puller.

Damn how late do some of you folks stay up?
Buncha damn vampires...
Its in perfect shape-still has white paint on timing mark from 87 GT 5spd V6 w/90k
I did a rebuild and made the mistake of buying fierostores hi-po dampner ($65) on my 1st v6 rebuild.
I can take a pic...wait a sec...need to walk out to garage...here you go

I had my harmonic balancer fall apart like you are describing. It was caused by a flywheel that was well out of balance. If you just replace your balancer, then check it every 3 months or so. If you have something out of balance in your engine then the new one will start to fall apart also.

They fall apart because the outer ring is only attached to the inner ring by a hard rubber sealer. I bought a GM Performance Balancer which has the outer ring pinned to the inner ring. The only down side to using this is you need to align and score a new timing mark to match the Fiero timing scale.

I had my balancer ring start to walk off at 170k. Actually I dont know when it started to I noticed it when I was under there doing other work. Cheap GM parts. I have ford motors with 300k from the 60's with the factory balancer showing no movement.

Actually the balancer is not terribly difficult to replace. Just go in thru the right rear wheel well. You will need a puller, an impact wrench is very handy here. Also while you have the balancer off its a good idea to replace the crank seal in the front cover.

Whats the downside of the Fiero Store balancer? I was considering that, but is there a better one and where?

I once had one fly apart on my 72 Datsun. Completly destroyed itself, as well as the water pump, alt pully, rad fan shaft and hood. It flew apart spinning 7800 rpms!

The Fiero Store balancer is a stock S-10 balancer that still needs the timing mark scored in. For $10 less, P.A.W. sells the GM Performance version which has steel pins going from the outer ring into the inner ring to prevent the outer ring from shifting or coming loose.
