Car runs great now!

Would you beleive that the brand new pump cracked after torquing it down per their instructions? This was a lovely feeling at 2a.m. in the morning after spending 5 hours sitting in the trunk. Got to do the job twice, I'm now an expert.

Couple of pointers (like you guys need my advice): DO put a towell over the fiberglass insulation so your arm doesn't itch and burn for 2 days, DO remove the plastic battery shield, DON'T remove the wiring harness next to the battery, DO use/borrow/steal an air ratchet for removal (be slow and careful if using it on the installation).

Things that were a pain in me arse: water pump pulley bolts, the bottom 2 pump bolts, replacing the 4 small pump bolts that were stripped or galled.

Thanks to everyone that helped me along, I imagine you saved me a bunch of money by not getting frustrated and taking it to a mechanic!

Congratulations and welcome to the "I replaced the water pump more than once" club. You should be able to do it in your sleep now.

Was the cracked pump a new one or a re-manufactured? I've had bad luck with re-manufactured and only buy New now.

Take care,

Carroll

Hey Carroll, yeah, brand spankin' new, not remanufactured. Steel impeller and lifetime replacement. You're right, I think I could do this again in probably 1/3 of the time! I used gasket and blue RTV. Really, one of the longest portions of the process was getting the mating surface perfectly clean of all the old gasket material. I made sure it was perfectly clean.

It's not really all that bad a job once you've done it a few times. Actually, replacing the timing cover to block gasket isn't all that bad either but I'd rather not have to do it again anytime soon.

Congratulations on the work.

I'm gearing up to replace the brake pads on my new (69200 mile 85GT). I hate fooling with the rear calipers but I'm too cheap to pay to have it done.

Later,

Carroll

Thanks for the congrats! Actually I'm not sure why I didn't go into a massive rage after the first one broke, I guess I was too tired and I would have woken my wife and little girl.

Good luck on the brakes. If it's anything like our Taurus's rear discs, you have to have a special tool. AARRRGGGHHH!
