ive got some AR-25 american racing rims for my 85GT which are 14x6's two of the rims have good 215/60/14's on them for the front's, im wondering if a 235 or 245 will fit on the rims, and will they work on the car I KNOW a 225 will work, but im wondering if that extra 10-20MM will make a huge difference.

Ill find out today if a 195/50/15 on a 15x7 ar-25 fits on my geo prism, wish me luck, Got all 8 rims at the junkyard for 100 bucks. in PERFECT SHAPE, 4 that fit the fiero have two good tires, and the 4 that fit the 4 lug geo have all 4 brand new tires with the little nubs on them.

That was a good find. I found four 16 inch grand am wheels at a junk yard for a good price but not as good as yours. They should be able to stretch em on there. One thing you have to consider is that with such a wide tire on a 6 inch wide rim it wont be as stable for cornering.

No! Well...Yes it can be mounted on the rim but this tire really demands a 7" minimum, there would be problems in the bead area and there would be a loss of handling performance because the tire tread would be too far beyond the rim of the wheel.

What most people don't realize is that 215s require at least a 5.5" wheel which means the stock 215/60X14 on 14X6 wheels was very near the design limit anyway. I would use 225s, I would use 235s if I got them so cheap that I couldn't refuse, but I wouldn't use 245s.
Tire company catalogs state that this tire needs a 7" rim.

I've had 235 wide tires on 6" wheels before and that is about the max you can go. 245 would be too wide and highly unsupported for the sidewalls. I don't think a tire place would even install them on a 6" wheel.

so i should use a 225 or 235,

will the 235's be horrible for handling? i want the car to handle fairly well also, or should i just stick with the 215's up front and 225's back?

225s will be much better, 235 will tend to be a little off and 245s, forget it.

Definatly go for the 225s. I installed 235s on a 14x6 wheel for a friend of mine. I would say the tire stuck out an inch and a half past the wheel on both sides. Looked like ass and you could feel it in the rear end when taking a tight corner.

I have 235s on my '68 Camaro's 14X6 wheels. I like the look of them on the Camaro but don't think they would look good on the Fiero.

235s are the largest width a 14X6 wheel will take (I think the tire fitment guides say something like 235 is not recommended but acceptable). When I was looking for the Camaro, one shop wanted to put on 245s, but I had done my homework and went with a set of 235s from Sam's Club.

theoretically with a wider tire on the back you inrease understeer. Stock from the factory the fiero had a lot of it. So if you dont want understeer youll have to have some suspention mods and play with tire pressures.lower in front higher in back.

For a short while, I had a pair of 245/60-SR14 tires on the back of my '87 SE, with an otherwise stock suspension. I hated them. They made the back end feel mushy, and the car wandered around a lot. As NINJAX guessed, the car did understeer pretty badly.

I'm currently using a set of 215/60-TR14 tires (all 4 wheels) with 30 PSI front / 32 PSI rear and the handling seems alright. It understeers a little until I get on the throttle, then it evens out.

A 60 profile is tall and the cross section of 245 is measured at the widest point on the tire not the width of the tread. So it is posable to have the same tread width on a 225 45 14 as a 245 60 14 but the 245 60 14 will be much taller because of the higher aspect ratio. The aspect ratio is the relationship between the tire width (245)and the side wall hight(60). So on a 245 60 14 the side wall will be 60% of the width(245mm total at the widest point) on a 14 inch rim. For your car to handle better you want a smaller aspect ratio like 245 45 16. The tire will be about the same dia. tread will be much wider, side walls will be much stiffer and this will have a bigger footprint and less side wall flex for better handeling. If you want your car to look and feel like a 4x4 truck then go with a high aspect ratio. If you want your car to handle well I would not go any wider than 215s and NO taller than 60. A 14x6 inch rim is a small rim so use small tires, if you want big tires you have to spend money to get big rims.
Just my $.02
PS: I did not use any conversion charts, the dementions I used are hipothetical and may very from any factual chart.
