Just wondering if anybody has run into this before, and knows how to get rid of it. My wipers will do a single pass whenever I start my car. Any ideas?

While it's possible that the problem is with the wiper switch (not the cruise lever)inside the steering column, I believe it is the delay module located on the outside of the wiper motor. it is rectangular and looks like a cover for the wiper motor. I've seen this on quite a few Fieros. Good luck!

I had the same problem, with an occaisonal additional quirk or two. It would sometimes STOP in mid-wipe, and sometimes sweep more than once.

Turned out to be the park switch in the wiper. Took it (the wiper motor) apart, and used a point/relay file on the contacts and it's been perfect ever since.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards GTDude's suggestion since my signal light stalk switches very crisply between all of the different modes, and if i recall correctly it was replaced not too long ago. Graudefas, with your problem with the wiper park switch, did it do anything unusual while you were using them? With something wrong with the park switch, it seems like they would give you problems all the time, rather than just at startup. Anyways, thanks for your help everybody, these are all things that I'll look into.

Both; single wipe now and then, too. What was happening was the switch was burnt and would sometimes stick and sometimes not make contact at all.

This problem can never be the stalk itself... the stalk only turns the switch down inside the column.

The delay board and the wiper motor itself are well known for problems. Many GM cars have these same problems as they age.

If you find damage on the delay board... go thru the wiper motor and linkage carefully. If they are binding, the extra current can cook the board.

It is important to always make sure the wipers are free before turning them on in winter. Frosted in arms/blades can also cook the board.

Had that problem on my '85. Sometimes they would just quit in mid-wipe. Then allofasudden they would make a pass or three. Sometimes would not go at all. I changed the wiper motor and no more problems.
Luckily I had a spare.

A mechanic once told me that all you have to do is take your wiper motor and drench it in oil overnight and after letting it drain it should be good to go.

Not sure if that works. Did not try as I was told after I replaced the orig.

Btw, I replaced the '85 with an '88 with no probs.
