Ok it's bad enough to have a Fiero sickness but I just bought an 85 Sunbird turbo convertible with no engine for $200. It's all there except the engine. I do not remember much about these engines other than they were hand assembled in the GM of Brazil engine plant and shipped up north to be used in the Sunbird and Grand Am. It developed about 165hp. Should be hard to find right? Found 2 about 15 miles from me but will probably take both to make one. Yard owner knows nothing about the history other than engines were bad and did not run. Neither looks like anything went through the block or pan. If my memory serves me they might have had problems with the heads so it might be an easy rebuild and a fun car to restore. The yard wants $50 each engine which translates to....Why not? Worth the risk. Any advice givers out there?

Awesome project. You can have a nice little convertible with some balls to boot. I would do it if I had the resources. Good luck! Get a maaco paint job and maybe some cheapo chrome rims and you'll be cruisin.

I have the exact same car in a hatchback, DEFINATLY fast, not sure the project of making it run was worth the work, since mine is on its 3rd engine & 3rd turbo. but hey if you get both engines save the leftover parts, you may need them, I did the same since i got a whole car for free.
Have fun, I wish I had a convertible

I had an '89 2.0 turbo convertible for a while. It was a semi fun car but would have been a lot better with a 5-spd. I think my year was supposed to make 170 hp, but it wasn't as fast as my 5-spd V6 Fieros.

Yes, these had head and head gasket problems. I got mine cheap because it had a cracked head. Mine was cracked between the valves. You'll want to check this on your junkyard motors.

This motor was also in some Grand Ams, but I'm not sure of the year. They're not too uncommon.

It'll be a fun project.

Why not swap in a v6 or a 4.9 caddy? I'd like to put a caddy in my cavalier, just for fun.

I thought about a 2.8 from a Fiero but I though it might not have enough hood clearance with the intake. The transmission is an MX1 and I would assume bolt right up. Anybody try this in an 80's J car? Problems? Might be easier that rebuilding the turbo.
