More or less what the topic says, My radio whines, not like a politician, it just has an annoying background "hum" and the lights/Gauges seem to flicker when I apply a new load such as stepping on the brakes. Any ideas?

I used to have the same problem. I put in an aftermarket CD player and the whining sound went away. Next I put in a new higher powered alternator, which helped a lot with the power dropping when I pressed brakes. Sometimes at night the lights still dim a little, and my water pump started siezing, so replacing it should fix the problem. I am in the middle of replacing the pump now.

Make sure the ground braid from the engine to the body is clean and tight. On the V6 cars, it runs from somewhere around the water pump area to the passenger-side decklid hinge.

1. When did the problem start? 2. Does the radio whine/hum when the engine is off? 3. Does the pitch of the whine change with engine speed? 4. Is the radio stock or after market? 5. If not stock, was an wiring adapter used or is it a chop job? 6. Is the original antenna being used or a replacement? 7. How old is your alternator and battery? How are the connections? 8. Have any other wiring modifications been made?
By providing more information you may get a SWAG rather than a WAG.
I do not recall when exactly the problem started other that tht whe it did ther were no other symtoms or malfunctions. the whine only happens when the engine is running and is heard through the radio corresponding to engine RPM. The car is completely stock at 58,000 and has all orignal equipment or a GM replacment part (radio is original stock). I replaced the original alternator thinking it could be the problem, I've had that in for about a thousand miles the battery was new last year. Howver my battery connections seem to be "poor" sometimes, I need to replace motor mounts and I think the motor may be moving the cables and loosening the connections. I will give further information below for general reference
86 GT 4 speed gold power windows manual mirrors no wing no rear defrost has air (working)
The problems may not be related. The radio whine could be from use of non-resistor plugs or low resistance ignition wires. The poor battery connections may account for the other symptoms.

the whine is from the tach filter has a bad ground or it has failed.
i dont know what year you have the V6 motors had a spot welded on the side of the case and bolted to the engine.
my 84 L4 had a wire soldered on to the side of it and the wire was bolted to the engine. when the wire broke away from the eyelet the radio started to whine. you can buy "noise suppressors" from radio shack, or fix or replace your tach filter.
un plug the tach wire from you coil if possible and see if the noise stops to test if it's the tach filter.
i also has a camero with a aftermarket radio in it that did this when i was 16, i didn't know what it was then so i just lived with it. then a friend told me about "noise filters" and i put one in and it went away.
hey i had the same or at least a similar problem, check you fuses , it is possible that you are using the wrong ampere fuse for your guage socket, (but check them all ne ways. Thats what fixed mine, hope that helped!
