Help!
I just recently bought an 84 2m4 SE for 150$, the car had been sitting for 9 years, and the guy I bought it from knew pretty much nothing about fieros. I bought a new battery and installed it into the fiero, cranked it over, and it started. I couldnt give it any gas though because the TBI unit was seized up. While working on this and attempting to fix it, I noticed that at times when I would try to start the car, sometimes it would crank over and start fine, while 90% of the time it wouldnt even try to crank over. I would just turn the key forward and nothing would happen. The radio would come on and I could hear the fuel pump kick on, everything works lights, etc. It just doesnt try to crank. Does anybody have any suggestions? Its a manual 4 speed, and it has clutch fluid brake fluid oil and radiator fluid in it, and its not in gear, I get the same thing in gear as well. Its a 10% chance it will start. Help help help! Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am trying to get it running for the rutland show since my dad is moving and cant bring the 'Dirty Rat'.
Please PM me any suggestions or email them to me at lilgoofstarlmcs@yahoo.com
Thanks in advance!
Rob Jr.

If it's been sitting that long, There could be corrosion on the starter motor.
I would change what $Rich$ says, plus the starter and I would check all the rubber hoses/vacuum lines, brake lines, electrical connections, Flush the cooling system, Change the oil and filter, distributor car/rotor.

I would think that if it was the starter motor it wouldnt start some times, and not others? Also I already changed the oil, coolant, brake and clutch fluid, there is one sensor on the drivers side of the motor on the top of the block next to the TBI unit that the last owner broke the connection off of, and so he just stuck the two wires into the sensor and filled it with rubber sealant. I am going to try taking that out and restripping the wires and setting them back in, and see if that helps, also I am going to try cleaning the connections, do you guys think that maybe the battery isnt putting out enough power to crank it? I mean, it is a 30$ autozone battery, and the lights dim when I try to crank it forward...

Where abouts is the clutch pedal switch located? That seems to be about the most reasonable thing to check right about now... Thanks ahead of time.

First of all nine years old gas is a really bad thing. I would drop the gas tank and remove the old gas from the tank and I would have the tank cleaned.

I would replace the fuel pump because I bet you that the hose that goes between the fuel pump and the gas line has a crack in it. Your fuel pump may pump but most of the pressure is going back into the tank. Believe me when I say I have been down that road. I spent many dollars on other things when I refused to think it was a fuel pump hose problem.

Mine would start once in a while just like yours. But would not keep running. Just a thought hope it helps.

Alright now that I actually have time to sit and explain my problem in detail, let's hope I can explain it better... lol.
Ok, I picked up the car 3 days ago. It is a 84 2m4 SE 4 speed. It had been sitting for 9 years, the guy I bought it from told me it ran beautifully before it was parked, he also said it may need some minor things and whatnot. The car only has 80k miles on it. I picked up the car and had it towed to my girlfriends house. The battery was dead of course, so I went to autozone and got a new battery, popped it in the car, it cranked over, it started. I then realized the gas pedal didnt move. I looked in the engine compartment and the TBI unit was seized up. While I was in the process of fixing that problem I would try and start the car, sometimes it would crank over and start, other times it wouldnt even try to crank over, I would turn the key forward to start it and nothing would happen except for the fuel pump kicking on. I understand what your trying to say about it maybe being the fluids or the fuel pump, but it wont even TRY to turn over, it doesnt crank at all. It was pretty much a 50/50 chance it would try and crank over. After I got the TBI unit fixed and everything working properly, I went to start the car, it cranked over, but hadnt had enough time to get gas into the motor before I stopped so that I wouldnt kill the battery (since its a cheap autozone battery) so I flicked the key back, and went to start it again, and it did nothing. All the lights work, the radio works, the dash works, the fuel pump kicks on, it just doesnt even try to crank over. Ive tried to start it in gear and out of gear, with the clutch in and with the clutch out... I changed the fluids, I cleaned all the connections to the battery (positive and ground) and I checked all the fuses under the dash. Any suggestions? Im trying to get it running by tonight so I dont have to have it towed to my mechanice since I cant afford it, and at the same time I am trying to get it running for the rutland show... I know the clutch is working because one of the times it did try to start it was in gear and it didnt move with the clutch in. Please help! lol :-(

Thanks in advance!

Well, I have good news and bad news. It hasnt been a pleasant first experience with fieros. I got the car to start today... And then it caught fire around the TBI unit, the gas ignited... I was able to put it out before it did too much damage from what I could see at night, the TBI plug that goes to the injector is melted away, but may still work, the fire had also spread to underneath the motor and on the side of the block, so off it goes to my mechanic tomorrow, lets hope she can be saved :-( *thinks to myself, sheesh, my parents never had problems like this, lol*
