i know the '88 block was internally balanced but did they improve the oiling system or anything else to make the '88 block superior to the earlier blocks?

Seems like I heard that the 88 (and maybe the 87) got lead-in grooves on the bearings to help with oiling.
Don't hold me to it, though. I could be wrong.

The blocks themselves are about identical. The crankshafts are different, the '88 crank is much better; neturally balanced and has lead-in grooves. Good new is the cranks are interchangeable between different year blocks.

The blocks have some subtle differences, but not anything that matters in a Fiero.

The '88 block has an undrilled boss for a crank position sensor, and it has a boss on the front and rear of the lifter galleries.

Internally they're identical.
