I want to mount a cone filter on the roof of my car in a housing so it scoups air from on top of the roof. With the high velocity I think I might get a tiny bit of a ram air effect. I am going to have it run straight into the TB from the filter. I will be doing it anyways but wanted imput onto weather it will give me a boost in performance. Making race cars is fun The air temp sens will be mounted in the intake track somewhere.

Sounds like a water trap in the making. You need to keep water from being sucked right into the throttle body.

I myself dont like the look of over the roof scoops. also makes it hard to open the rear hood. but, if you want to actually go for the mythical "ram air" effect, you should go with about 1" high opening, thats about 3/4 width the roof, that opens behind the window to a chamber with about twice the volume of the opening, with your cone filter in the chamber. The chamber will become a high pressure area, and needs to be bigger than the inlet feeding it. the bigger it is, the more pressure it will have.

Personnally, its a waste of time and money. If you are only goin for looks maybe but I have not seen a roof scoop that looked good. The trans am's ram air hood doesn't even become effective untill after 80mpg.

there have been discussions about this here before

from a physics point of view, you cant compress air the way you are talking about until your car hits something like mach 2 :c)

and for a scoop to have any effect at all, there has to be a large open space inside the scoop

by the time the air gets down to your intake valves, whatever is happening at the top of your roof wont make any difference.

you are thinking of the indy scoop. mine will be nothing like that. The roof will have a scoop built into it and there will be a pipe running down through the engine grill to the TB. It will not affect my trunk lid. Any suppesgions on the size of the intake tubing? I was thinking 3" from the roof to the Tb and have a reducer to mate it to the TB. Or should I have the tube the same size all the way from the filter back. I don't have to worry about water we don't race when its raining. I think it is better to suck in clean air than dust that gets thrown up by the front tires while I am racing. It will be light weight only about 2lbs so it shouldent affect my cars stability. I will have pics of the finished product for yous
