Curious on cost of crank and pistons for 2.8 to 3.1 conversion by headhunter

Just looking to see what people spent on the pistons and crank to convert their 2.8 to 3.1.

So far I've had quotes of $45/piston and $400 for crank +kit. Sounds high to me...

$400 is not bad price for a NEW crank & pistons. The pistons should be around $30 each for Hypereutectic. and you still need to get it all balanced too. a iron head 3.1 shortblock might be more what you want. or a junkyard camaro 3.1. already put toegther & balanced. I've noticed its always cheaper to buy in a most complete state. you get all parts, and still have to buy all the services, it get expensive. but you get the pride of building your own engine, and the peace of mind knowing its all good, and the exact parts you want.

Looking at my City Motor Supply receipts from last year, I see Pistons, Sylvolite 1486, for $66.92 for all 6, 981 casting crank with matched rod and main bearings, $80 with $90 core charge, rings were $50.70, for total of $287.62 + 8.25% sales tax.

im assuming the pistons are cast? How much extra would it have been to upgrade to hyperutectics? Any more info? I was going to go with the engine-parts.com kit but if i can get the same stuff cheaper id rather do that

I didn't look into hypereutectic pistons at all. They're fairly expensive, and as near as I can tell about the only benefit is being able to run ever so slightly tighter cylinder clearances due to the thermal coefficient of expansion being more similar to the iron block. I see Fieros with 150-190k miles on them and still running, and when they do fail it's rod bearings and not pistons, so I figure stock pistons will work just fine. I do know that hypereutectics are much more brittle than stock pistons and as a result suffer a lot of damage when they experience detonation.

well id plan on running a big cam and add a 75-100 shot of nitrous and it will be a daily driver. Aiming for about 225-230hp using the edelbrock carbed intake. Thought maybe hypereutectic pistons would be better

No, you want to run forged pistons. Hypereutectics don't work too well if you get detonation, even detonation that you can't hear. Problem is that they're very brittle compared to a regular piston. You'll wind up with a broke piston for sure if you make even the slightest mistake on mixture and lean it out.
