I've read a few books on Automotive painting and theres no need to strip the paint off completely.Fill any hair line cracks with bumper bondo, then sand the surface just enough to dull the surface of the paint. You must fill those hair line cracks or they will show up later after the bumper is painted. Then primer.

The Paint that is currently on the bumpers is not adhering too well in the 1st place, the result of poor preparation from the people that fixed it on a preveous insurance claim. So I have no choice but to remove the preveous mistake, and just wanted to avoid a couple hours of sanding off the crappy paint.
I'll try my local pro body shop and see what they recommend... but thanks guys!

I been in body business since 60s. I wont strip ANY non metal parts ... period. And I wont touch a car that a customer has stripped with anything other than media blasting. If someone has had good luck with any product, they were lucky. All it takes is a drop or 2 in a crack or pinhole to screw it up. So in my opinion NOOOO !!! sand it or media blast it.

I'm with Roger and Mark but I'm like the 9th or 10th paint guy... NO STRIPPER!!!
If the bumper is REALLY bad and needs repairs I recommend you talk to your local body shop and have them send it with their local Keystone Bumper rep when he stops in. They will hot tank it, repair any defects, and send it back like new ready for paint for like $150.00
I know, I just got done doing it.

Media Blasting... bead blasting are the same thing? When I get my car blasted, what kinda extra prep is needed? Just your typical fill in the small cracks and primer?
Alot of places around here will not work on a car if they dont do it from the start.

Usually for fiberglass and urathane parts, walnut shells is best. Beads can roughen up the surface a little too much. Whatever you select, have them do a sample spot to see what its going to do before giving them the whole car. If you take a car, make sure they wrap the engine and brakes to keep all the particles out.
