I'm replacing the A/C compressor and reciever/dryer for an engine swap but I'm not sure how much oil to put in the new dryer. The compressor is used so I'll just see how much oil pours out of my old compressor and add that much to the other one but what about the dryer? Same thing? My A/C worked great before the swap, it's an '86 GT now with a V-5 compressor. Oh and I'm still using R-12. Thanks for any responses.

The AC system if totally dry takes 8oz of oil for the whole system, hope that helps a little.

I would put 2 ozs in the drier and 3 in the compressor and recharge it. You will not get all the oil out of the compressor no matter what you do to tell how much was left in it. DO NOT try to flush out the compressor.

Ok so 3 and 2 oz. sounds good. I should lube the O-rings with the same oil right? And what about the orifice tube? Do I have to replace it with something different since I now have a variable displacement compressor? I read in the archives that I should have an expansion valve instead of an orifice tube now right?

Lube the O-rings with the same oil (mineral oil).

I have a V5 compressor in my '95 Cavalier. That system also uses an orifice tube (not an expansion valve). It would seem that the V5 compressor would just "pump less" at reduced demand.

Here's a good link for all your A/C questions, if you can't get a definite answer here....
