I need to replace my AC compressor. I want
to purchase a remanfactured one, but there
are different models numbers. I have a 1988
GT with VIN# 1G2PG1194JP222941. The AC was
part of option package 15A (AC conditioner
C60).

The service manual says VIN "9" is
compressor HR6. Then it says there are two
types of HR6. One with a thin torque cushion
and one without.

I've done a search on Parts America and
it looks like there are 3 choices that could match up. How do I make sure I'm getting the
correct one?

Also, How hard is it to remove/replace the
AC compressor. Can a fairly competent person
do the work at home, or is this a shop thing
all the way? (Note; the dealer wants 5 hrs
of labor to R/R and charge the system). I've
heard it's not hard to charge the AC
compressor yourself. Any comments would be
appreciated. THX.

Five hours to replace the compressor and charge the system is probably about right.
Replacing the compressor is a royal pain in the azz. Just installed one, by the way.
My car (actually the donor for my swap) came with an HR6 compressor that I inadvertantly burned up. Compressor kicked in with a vacuum on the system. No refrigerant at all. Instant doorstop. Don't ask.
I replaced it with a used DA6 compressor because it was available for cheap, and I was in a hurry. Works just fine, though. I *didn't* convert to R134, as I had enough R12 laying around to completely charge the system.

To answer your question, I'm not sure what the differences are between the two HR6 compressors. Perhaps there is something in TheOgre's Cave (Link at the top of the page.)

Vacuuming and charging the system isn't too hard if you know what you're doing. (I don't, therefore I had someone do it for me.) Took the better part of an hour. You really need a vacuum pump, and it helps if you have gauges.

I have several compressors from various year 2.5 Fieros. The main difference from what I can see is the pully diameter and belt type, either serpent or v-belt. Other than that the compressors all look the same and have the same mountings.

There are numbers on the compressors, I'll see if I can work up a basic data sheet for the various types.
