Which is the #1 cylinder? The one closer to the distributor or the alternator? The Haynes manual has a pictorial showing one and another saying it is on the left.

on a v6 it would be the one closest to the alternator.... because the one closest to the distributor is the 5th i believe

On GM engines it's always the cylinder closest to the water pump.

on all engines, it is the piston that is the closest to the front of the engine. (or has the connecting rod closest to the front of the crank shaft)

well there was a 4 cylinder motorcycle that had 2 crank shafts in the 50's and that one was weird so never mind it.
