Ok so some of you may know my 4t60e in X started whining a few weeks ago. I tore into it the other day, thinking the front pump was bad. So I get the front pump off and take it into my tranny parts store, and they tear it apart for me and tell me its fine. They said to check the bearing that runs the front pump drive shaft, behind the valve body. I havent pulled the valve body off yet, but I pulled on the shaft and there is about 1/8 of an inch of play in and out. Is this normal? Im thinking not. BTW whatever is whining caused it to throw a trouble code, but I cant check my trouble codes. The only man in the world that can is MIA somewhere in Canada.
The guys at the transmission parts store said that bearing will whine like mad, but how could a bearing cause it to throw a code? Thanks.

The only code that is transmission related that I can see would be the VSS.....but that doesn't seem likely in this case. As for the whining noise, my troubleshooting chart only lists "low fluid level" and "defective torque converter, scored gears". As for the play in the shaft, I can't be certain if there should be play, but 1/8" seems like a bit more than it should have, if any. As for checking the codes, you should be able to do a search and come up with proceedure as well as explaination for all codes.

The 4t60e has it's own computer module, so it CAN throw it's own codes...

Did the tranny try and limp-home? (jams in 2nd gear)

Actually theres dozens of codes the tranny can throw, and at this point im thinking its the torque converter because it would feel like the tranny was slipping in 2nd and 3rd gears. It would still shift fine, and feel fine. Lockup works, everything works. It just whines, feels like its slipping, and is setting my ses light. It never went into limp home mode, everything seems normal. Thanks

fieroX;

I remember when I was working at a GM dealership that we had a couple of these 4T60-E's come in with this problem. I think it did have something to do with the pump drive bushing but I was not working on them so I couldn't tell you for sure. I am assuming you have this whine any time the engine is running? What torque converter are you running? If you are not running a really good aftermarket unit there is a chance that you are balloning the converter with all of the power you are making. This could be damaging something causing your problem. Try emailing your problem/questions to my buddy at 3d transmissions: autotran3d@aol.com

I am sure he would be happy to help you out as much as he can over the emails as possible.

BTW to the person who hates automatics; when you grenade a diff thru that 282 case, let me know how happy you are once you have to try to find another one and have it rebuilt. $$$$$$$$

Have the Isuzu 5 speed....not worried about finding money to have it fixed as they're a dime a dozen out here in the wrecking yards.
