Okay guys and gals. The info I have found from this forum has helped me tremendously but I think it comes down to a point where I cannot progress without professional help. I've been working on my 87 GT for the past two weeks. I bought it from a guy that has let it set out in the elements for the past two and a half years. He told me from the start that it just died on him and he did everything in his powers to fix it. I searched this site from day one and still I'm having trouble. I did all the basixs that I found on the forum. Got spark, got gas. Timing is still an issue but i doubt that is what is giving me so much trouble. Everything looks okay but have some oil leakage. I pretty much want to get my engine rebuilt. Could someone give me a typical price on the worst case scenario? thanks

You can get a rebuilt 2.8, 3.1 or 3.4 for around $2K +/- $500. Unless you know the engine or the person selling the engine, I'd stay away from a used 2.8 Fiero engine. Most likely, it will be a high milage one.

If you want to deal with a known reputable vendor Ed Parks at the Fiero factory uses several remanufactured engines for swaps. Bob Steiger at Twin Lakes Auto has some low milage 2.8s at his shop. (see vendor list)

I was going to rebuild mine but then realize that a swap is the same $$$ and have a better engine.

You could by a new motor slightly used from GT-X. He has a 2.8 with only 60K on it. I can't remember exactly what he is askin for it but I do know it isn't much by the way he has expressed on how much he would get rid of it. I bet for one or two green backs he would sell it to ya....

Go to a yard and get a 3.4 out of a Camaro. They can be had for cheap and are pretty much a direct bolt in. Just need to drill holes on the opposite side of the engine for the starter and there are people here with the tools to so it.

When I was looking for engines to do a conversion I found many 3.4s for around $1000. All you need is the long block, everything will carry over from your 2.8.

Give Loyde Rasco (972-880-6643) in Dallas a call. He's not too far down the road and he can probably get your V-6 running. He's owns a shop that specializes in Fiero repairs. The oil leak could be the distributor O-ring. Your 2.8 may have some life left in it. Otherwise, I agree that a 3.4 out of a Camero is probably the best way to go. But talk to Loyde, he will get you lined out. Welcome to the forum. I'm aware of PFF members in El Paso, San Angelo (MaryJane), and Andrews, you make it four in West Texas

I'm pretty much going to have to settle with the 2.8l rebuild. But I do have a few more question. The gas in my car has been sitting for over two years. Will that cause problems? Also about the timing issue. I've read several posts about timing and they are basically the same. Could someone give some detailed instructions? Also are there more than one timing mark on the dampner? Thanks everyone. this round is on me

I replaced mine with a Grooms long block I got through Ed Parks. It cost me $1175 in 1999. I've put about 70000 miles on it so far and love it.

There was no labor cost involved since I did it myself.

I hav priced out getting my original engine rebuilt and the machine work and parts was going to cost around $1200. The Grooms engine is great and at the time came with an 18 month unlimited mileage warranty. I believe the warranties are better now. They can also provide a 3.4L engine for a bit more.

I bought a new crate engine from a surplus parts outfit on Ebay. $360 delivered, looks great, haven't put it in yet, but it is hard to beat new.

After sitting for a while gas looses it's punch. Try draining the tank and add fresh fuel, fuel pump might also be clogged.
Timing, there are three markes on the harmonic balancer, two are narrow and one is wide. The wide one is the one to use to time with and to index #1 TDC on either the compression or exhaust stroke. Clean the scale up so you can see the degree index and I usually use white paint to fill the wide grove so that it is easy to see.
Hope this helps!
