OK, not really, but kind of. Last year my 85GT developed a short, so I bought another new battery and paid my mechanic $500 bucks to find out why my batteries kept going dead. He said one of the diods in the alternator was bad and replaced it. 2 days later the battery was dead again, disgusted, I let the car sit over the winter. Last week I took it to a another mechanic that specializes in electrical repair, $250 in labor later he traced it to the passenger side front headlamp. Though he didn't seem to be sure if it was the relay, or the headlamp motor itself that was drawing.
I have a couple extra headlamps, so I'll probably try and throw one of those in, but anyone know if relays are still available for our cars?

Yes the relays are still available, what year is your fiero? the 87-88's are like 120 bucks for the relay, the earlier models are cheaper i think.

Chop Top... a relay is a relay. You can use mose generic relays for the same application. A relay is just an electrically induced switch that opens a circuit with higher amps by activation of another circuit with lower amps.

There are fog/running light relay kits at most auto parts stores that may be cheaper to use in the future than expensive stock relays. They work also for horns.

Good luck

Thanks for the feedback folks, I should have pointed out the majority of the cost were labor associated, at 50 to 75 bucks an hour it doesn't take long to run up a bill. I'll give Rodney a call and see if he also sells relays. Thanks.

You might want to think about the headlight motor. I had the same problem, and one of my headlight motors werent going all the way down. When it hits bottom, it turns itself off via a small spring loaded washer. Mine was never turning itself off, so every 5 seconds or so, the relay kept trying to turn the motor down. This obviously ran my battery down overnight. I replaced the headlight motor and it fixed the problem. I just wanted to throw in my $.02 worth...

The best and most bulletproof relay for standard use is the old Ford starter relay from the mid '60's. It is a real durable design.

It has four lead locations that are all studs with nuts on them. There are two outside ones and two center ones. You attach: L=battery center/left=switch first side, center/right=other switch lead, right=to light. Take ground off the light to any ground near light.
