I want to replace my sunroof with a hardtop. Do I need to get the top roof section all the way forward to the A-pillars ? Is this just a matter of placing the new section on and riveting, or do I need to cut and weld ? Thanks ..

This is not that hard a job (just did mine)
You dont need to weld anything. If you can get a roof pannel intact. Its just a remove and reinstall. If like me you get one that is broken (they are verry hard to get off in one pice) I cut out the center from the new pannel using the sunroof as a patern I cut it about 1/2" larger all the way around 1" total and sanded it to fit. I used some poly rope as a spacer and liquid nails to glue it and the rope down Making sure it didnt get near the edge to be bonded to the old skin. Then I used bondo fiberglass (with long strands) to fill in the gap all the way around. Then its just a matter of filling and sanding it in.
I posted some pics of the result inhttps://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/036271.html

I just converted my car from hardtop to t-top. One of these roof panels would do the trick.

Just get a solid roof panel and swap it with the sunroof panel. There are several nuts under the headliner and a few screws at the base of the windshield. You will have to remove and replace the black plastic molding that goes around the windshield. After you remove the molding, wipers, cowl screen, sunroof and frame, headliner, and all of the nuts and screws, you need to carefully cut through the goop that bonds the panel to the space frame in front of and behind the sunroof opening. Some people use a long thin knife and some use a stronge cable, threaded through both sides and drawn through the goop like a cheese slicer.

Once the goop is cut, you can lift the panel forward and off. Be VERY CAREFUL around the area where the a-pillars meet the roof. They are very thin and will break in a heartbeat, especially if the goop is not cut all the way through. If you do crack it, it can be fixed with some fiberglass and Bondo.

Glue the new panel down with silicone or any other flexible, weather proof adhesive.

If you lived closer, I'd trade ya straight up for a solid panel and headliner I have on my '84.
