I saw a post about using 94 cavalier front rotors for the rear rotors in the fiero 88gt's.

I bought a pair from napa and they looked almost the exact same size. A little smaller in diameter but slightly thicker in width. NOw i tried to put them on the rear and it is just too thick to fit in between the callipers. Is there some sort of modification that I have to do? I pushed the cylinder all the way down and there still isnt' enough room...

The cavalier calipers will not fit.

The cavalier rotors are only .05" thicker than the Fiero rotors. Are you sure you have the piston turned in all the way? Maybe try different pads. Or cut the rotors.

I'm using a set on the back of an 1988 Coupe. I bought mine at Autozone. My service plan is to replace the rear rotors when changing pads since they are inexpensive - about $20.00 each.

They fit!

Did you compress the caliper piston?

I have heard that some people have had to shave a little bit of material off of their pads in order to get them to fit over the Cavalier rotors.

As the rotors are made with extra tolerance to resurface them, would it not be easier to have them turned to fit? Unfortunately it costs almost as much here to have them turned as to buy new ones.

I believe you said you “pushed” your cylinder all the way down. The 88 calipers need to be screwed in, to compress the caliper. I used a tool made specifically for this job. You should be able to pick it up at any automotive parts store, plus it’s pretty cheap. It’s just a little square metal tool that you place on the end of a socket wrench. It should have little prongs on each of its sides.

Anyway, I recently installed the cavalier rotors on the rear of my 88 coupe and it worked out just fine, new brake pads too. The only problem I ran into was that the dust shields were rubbing up against the new rotors. A little gentle persuasion and I was good to go.

Hope this helps, good luck

Phantom Rage speaks for me too! I have the cavalier rotors on the rear of my 88 GT, they fit fine. You need to compress the rear calipers by screwing them in with the special tool he mentioned. I, too, had the backing plates rubbing just slightly; I didn't notice it until I was driving at nighttime that day, just bent it out of the way using my hands!

Those dust shields sure are a pain, I've had to adjust them or get gravel out of them several times since I got my car...almost seem like more trouble than they're worth and they limit cooling on top of it all.

I just got Cavalier roters on the back of my 88 GT today. I'm not a mechanic so I had a good suspension shop put them in. He said that it was no problem. They were for the "97" Cavalier, but I believe that they are the same for several years. Did the braided brake lines from Fiero Store too. I feel a lot better now.
