i cracked the housing on the automatic transmission, my father says it can be welded. (ive welded my getrag before) im just wondering what kinda success people have had with long cracks, (14" long crack) along the outside parts of the transmission near where it bolts down.

I never trust welds on cast iron engine/trans parts except to make a sale on a vehicle. I seen too many weld jobs, heads, exhaust, bell housing, blocks just crack back in same place almost right away. For my own car, id replace it.

My question is...
What the heck are you doing to crack the case on an auto and a manual tranny???

It depends on allot of things. The crack, location, who's doing the welding, and other stuff. there's no way I'd even guess without seeing the crack.

I bought a 1988 Formula tranny for $50 do to the mounting ear being broken off the bellhousing. I swapped the parts with a housing from a 5spd Getrag from a Corsica. I used Dickmam's instructions, and even bought some parts from him in the process.

actually its already welded up. LOOKS GREAT, the local custom welding shop does a great job.

so far they ahve welded for me.

1. 4 speed munci shift cable bracket.
2. alloy rim with crack in it.
3. getrag 5 speed with lower ear broken off.
4. hydromatic 3 speed (th125c) with 14-16" crack up the side. the guy who welded it up said that the crack doesnt look bad, it was easy to weld. and he will guarentee the weld for the lifetime of the transmission.
