i am getting a 3800sc to put into my car it has 0 miles on it and the auto transmission that comes on the grand prix gtp is attached. i have the 4 speed manual in my car now. do you think i should keep it or go with the auto. supposedly with a little fabrication i can get it in there. my boyfriend says he thinks i would do better with the auto in there at the track. but i have only had manual cars my whole life except my winter car which is a cherokee. does anyone have any suggestions?

Well, a manual is much more fun to drive, but the clutch problems with the Fiero trannys aren't too fun. The auto is probably rated for higher torque, but I'm not positive. It's pretty much just a personal preference, I think. Motor and tranny mounts are available for either setup for about the same cost.
Ive got a auto in mine and its still a fast fast car. And I am getting 27-30 miles to the gallon. Depends on preference. The auto is easier to drive fast.

The newer automatic transmissions will be as good as a standard transmission, when it comes to performance, there is very little difference in the performance of both due to the new software programs the automatics now run. Some cars with auto trannies even have better gas mileage ratings than their standard counterparts. I would stick with the auto tranny that is mated to that engine as it is a matched pair.
Thanks for the help i guess i will probably go with the auto i really love driving manuals but the clutch problems are what i am worried about. i just don't want my car to be too girlie. thanks for the help!

what clutch problems? There are many people running a manual trans with the 3800. So it works. If your worried about the Clutch not holding, There are many new clutches coming out now that WILL hold. CrazyD is running the zz430(430hp/430tq) and it holds great. And only costs about $300. yeah an auto with that engine is a great combo, but why get rid of the manual, if thats what you like.
btw: shameless plug here. My buddy is running a 406 cube Small block chevy. he just had a custom clutch Built from McLeod Clutches. His motor puts out about 450lb-ft of Torque at a Low rpm all the way to 5500rpm. This clutch should have the Drivability of the Centerforce, but is expected to hold for this engine. Testing will start in a few weeks. I also intend on being a test bug for this clutch.
I have a manual 3800SC. I would keep the four speed you have. The sale of the new auto transmission would help cover the expenses of the clutch and flywheel. The installation would be easier since you do not have to convert the car over to auto with the auto shifter, changing the steering column, wire harness and pedals. Besides a true sports car should have a manual trans, IMHO, and you prefer a manual trans.
