I am needing to change the motor in my pace car and I have a 43,000 mile tech 4 I would like to use. I know I will need the harness for an automatic since the donar car was a 5 speed. I am just not sure what the switch would require.
Thanks, Todd

If the Tech 4 you have is one from '87 or later you are going to have to replace the entire wiring harness and computer. The later year production 2.5L used coil packs instead of a distributer.

For the trouble it is I would suggest making a trip to the wrecking yard for an earlier engine. It will cost a few bucks but, in my opinion, be worth it for the ease of replacement.

What is the difference between the Pace Car's Tech 4 and any Tech 4 from a 1984 through 1986? Swapping in a V6 into your 84 is difficult, but the block and head in your pace car is the same as all the early Fiero 4 cylinders.

No difference. The "distributer" motors are basically interchangable. Some of the external parts (wiring, brackets and such) have differences, but the "long block" is a direct swap. It's only when you get into the 87-88 motors with DIS that things get complicated.

The 87-88 "Tech4" engines use a different intake manifold and injector unit from the earlier (non-Tech4 label) engines. The noticable difference is the air intake, the early engines have a thermac valve and a warm air "furnace" on the exhaust, the later engines do not have a Thermac because they have an intake air temperature sensor (forget the exact name). The result is a completely different electronics package.

If your 84 cylinder head, TBI and distributor are good it should fit a later block (as long as you have a distributor engine). Well you should get the picture now.

I am sorry I did not clarify what I have. I have an 84 indy that does not have the original engine in it, although it is an iron duke w/o DIS. I am getting no compression reading on cylinder #2 and #1 only has 50lbs. That was as far as I went. I figured that was far enough. I have an 88 tech 4 I am thinking about using as a replacement. My pace car is an automatic and the 88 is a 5 speed. What I need to know is what has to be changed for this swap. I am aware of the DIS system being different but if I can get away with a computer chip in the 88 computer and an automatic harness I am going to swap it out. I have other engines I can use but none of them are in as good shape as this one. The pace car is a daily driver and has 150,000 miles on it. I just use it for transportation so originality isn't a big concern. Thank you for any input.
