I've heard it is possible to convert the Fiero's key system into a single key system, ie one that uses the same key for the doors, locks, and decklid. Can anyone point me in the direction of this? How hard is it to install?

Well I would start by buying all new locks. Ignition, door, and trunk. Then take them to a lock smith and say
"make them all the same key" That simple. The reason why I say get new locks (and from GM no other)
is because chances you're current locks can use replacement...

When you get the new door locks, you will notice that the little metal retaining ring/cover that holds the lock together
will easily pull off. I've had these come apart when I was trying to force my key in to the lock, it takes little effort, and
all the tumblers fall out and the lock is no good. Well you will notice that this ring/cover is healed on with small machine
indentations into the casting on the lock.... hum... you fallow... like this:

Lock casting Ring / cover

Hole in casting | < Machine indentation
GAP!

Well any way. it's a cheep way for GM to hold the tumblers together - But it sucks because they don't stamp the ring / cover
indentation all the way in to the casting hole, only like half way, and this comes off very easy. take a real punch and pound
the hell out of this indentation until it seats all the way in to the casting hole.

Once you have a set of locks you will see what I mean.....

Because I was a Pontiac dealer I had to do lock work as well. If I were you I would just tell the locksmith what you want and let him put together the correct pieces because he will know which blanks and cyls, etc. that he needs to make it work. I know that it can be done, but not all that easily. The police use the 1 key system and there may be others, but you will save time, money and energy by letting the locksmith do it all. Unless he's trying to rob you. This job should cost about $75 to $100 for the 2 door cyl and keys 1 trunk cyl and key, 1 ign lock and key. Have fun putting the door locks in.........LOL.

There was a post on here a while ago and the guy determined that the main difference between the keys is that one (igniton??) has an extra groove that the other (door??) does not. So he ised a Dremel or something to cut a similar groove in the door key and then had the ignition lock keyed to match the newly grooved door key. That's all there was to it. I had the ign lock on my Windstar re-keyed last week for about $30 - removed and brought into the locksmith's shop.

This one is so easy I am real surprised that more people do not do it.

Bring your door key to a locksmith and have him code an unrestricted keyway ignition lock to your door key. I did this to my car a couple months ago and got the ignition lock, keyed to my door key for $20. Replace the ignition lock and you are done.

Agreed, although there is a cheaper way…
And I like cheap.

Have a lock smith cut an A+B blank that will unlock your door. Then rekey your ignition switch to fit the key. Out 5 bucks and a couple hours of work.

This is a new one to me, an A/B blank, cool. How hard is it to get this blank replaced in the future when you are getting a copy made though? I guess that would be my only fear. With the cylinder replaced you would be able to get a key cut anyplace.

Just outta curiosity, what about replacing the door locks or the ignition cylinder or both with ones from a late-model GM like a Sunfire/Cavalier? Are the cylinders way different or something?

I was thinking about replacing my locks with the security ones. At work I carry APC and they've got a universal(hah) three-lock setup that looks kinda cool. They're the round keys like on a D-type bike lock. Looks pretty trick. Anyway, just an idea.
