How do I get rid of all the black in the tail pipes?? When I start the car up black soot shoots out the tail pipe. Not everytime and its just for a second, but its getting my exhaust tips nasty. Also getting the rear bumper nasty. Does this mean that my car is running rich?? Would do I check to try and resolve this? My car is an 86 GT auto with a 2.8 bored and stroked to a 3.2. The engine has 3,100 miles on it.
Thanks Ken

Sounds like an injector leaking or the cold start valve. You can check fuel pressure with a mechanical gauge, key to run, (don't start). Pressure should be 40-45 psi and hold it after fuel pump relay goes off. If pressure goes down rapidly, then injector leaking or fuel pressure regulator diaphram bad. If cold start valve, try unplugging the CSV connector. I would bet on injector or pressure regulator....Paul

You might consider takeing the pressure washer from the car wash and stick it in the exhaust pipes so wear so old cloths. It may run ruff when you first start it because the remaining water is pushed out the exhaust. It sounds like your cat may be going bad are you loseing power?Get a fire extinguisher too.Your car can catch fire if the cat goes bad.Does it first smoke like a Diesel?
The car does not have a cat. It is an Ocelot exhaust system. Here is a pic of one of the plugs that I pulled. Its green?!? Why?? No I am not loosing any power. The soot does not come flying out all the time, mainly only when I first start it up after sitting for a while.

Well, the only thing I can even come up with for the green tinted deposits is one of two things. First you could possibly have old fuel running through the system if the car has sat for a while. The green caused by varnish buildup. Less likely but still possible if you have anti-freeze entering the fuel system somewhere. Other than either of those, which I'm inclined to think it might not be either I would suggest replacing the plugs to see if the new plugs develope the same green haze.
Well I do know that before I bought the car it ran on a differnt fuel higher than Premium. Not sure what the name is off the top of my head, but the color of the fuel was blue. That might lead to why its this color. I think I am going to buy new plugs and see where that gets me.

I got some blue fuel....it is Sunoco 100 octane unleaded racing gasoline. Sure this guy didn't have a turbo on it, but removed it before selling? How long have you owned it? Just curious......Paul
No it never had a turbo. David Gunsul built the car and I bought it off of him. He is one of my good friends. I have had the car not to long. I bought it just before winter, so really have not driven it that much. I put about 1,000 miles on it since I have owned it. I know that the engine is built very nicley. I think he was going to turbo it, but am not sure. When I get a hold of him I will ask him why the green on the spark plugs. I am sure he will be able to tell me unless someone else here can. As far as cleaning the tips I use Wenol. This stiff is awsome for cleaning, shines right up like a mirror now. Same with the rest of the engine did.
Thanks Ken

i just keep the outside polished, bumper cleaned. Leave the black inside mine with turbo has always been black, rather run a little rich than a little lean.
