Hi gang! Been lurking in the shadows, caves and archives for the answers for the most controversial subject: engine swap. Several strings have a ton of responses but the initial question gets lost with speculation and (mis?)information. I'm not looking for a pissing contest, just honest, real answers on swaps that you have personally done, not commenting on which is "better". The questions are: type of engine, time involved, cost, hp, torque, 0-60, gas mileage. Any unusual engines? ALL conversions are welcomed to respond, except for the diesel...
Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Hi welcome to the forum. I to am new to the forum as well. As to the questions you have I can't answer all the questions you have but, I will answer some of them the best I can. I have talked to Phil, a forum memeber for some time now and he has a 3.8 SC V6. After hearing what his car is like in performance and gas milage I went ahead and started my project of my 3.8 swap. The statistics that I have been told the best to I can remember is something like around 220 horse at the wheels and around 28 to 30 miles a gallon. So far I have about $2300.00 into my car and that includes the motor(wiring harness and puter), the altenator,AC pressor, fuel pump, mounts. I am paying to have the electrical work done because I'm color blind and that will run me $400 but that is included in the price above. So far I have done nothing but research on the install but I should be turning some wrenches in about a week. I'm going to take a week or so off from work when I start the project and I have about 3 really close friend (that are mechanics) that are going to help me out for the amount of time it takes me to get it in. Hopefully this information that I gave you will help out in someway.

Welcome to the forum again.

I'm a little poorer than some of these swappers so I'm just clunking along at my own speed. My car is a toy, so down time is still toy time of a different sort. If you NEED your car you may have a rougher time.

I'm doing a Series I 3800 s/c from a 92 Bonneville SSEi. The car is pretty rusty but the motor is a GM rebuilt about 3 years old with approx 45000 miles. I plan to leave it pretty stock, but I'm sure I'll have to get some new bits like sensors etc along the way.

So far I have just done research (free) and am still pulling parts off the car. I'll be doing the harness myself so it's just time involved there (plus manuals and soldering stuff).

I am in now for about 600.00 US (basically the Bonnie and a Camaro flywheel). Still need to make mounts and get pulleys belts, etc as needed. I have managed over the years to accumulate tools, a hoist, engine stand and odds an sods but these are things that a first timer may have to spring for as well.

The biggest thing of course, is your time. We can let it go as cheap entertainment or a learning experience. If you are having a shop do the work it will add up fast.

vortecfiero: I checked out your web page; impressive! How much time did you put into the swap?

fierobuzz:Just like you and a bunch of other people, I don't have the cash flow at this time to hand the keys to a professional and say 'do this'. A couple other projects in the way... Besides, just like what skitime said, if you do the work yourself, you know all there is to know about your own car. I prefer that. I'm just on the fence deciding which engine to throw into my toy. Having reliable answers might help.
Thanks both of you for your inputs.
