Anyone who has ever changed a wiper switch.... I have my column torn down to where I can see the wiper switch. In other words, I have moved the turn signal cam out of the way and can see four shiny TORX® screws that look aweful scary to remove. I could use some advice on where to go from here.

It's REAL easy to change if you have the right tools. First remove the steering wheel, lock plate, turn signal cancel cam and spring. You will see three screws that hold the turn signal switch in place, remove those as well as the phillips screw for the turn signal lever. You will also need to remove the support bracket that attaches the steering column as the wiring for the turn signal and wiper switch run through a plastic channel between the bracket and column. Next you should see some torxs screws, I believe there are three silver and one black (the black one MIGHT be phillips as I've seen both types used). The black one holds the ignition cylinder in place and must be removed. Remove the torx screws in order to separate the two column covers from each other. Once you have the cover removed just drive the pin out for the wiper switch. The switch can be tricky to remove and might take some creative maneuvering. Installation is the reverse of removal. (don't ya just LOVE that line. heh).

Thank you. I was afraid to take the screws out that hold the steering column sleeve in place because I didn't know what all was going to come flying out with it. (making the reverse of removal a little interesting) So, anyway, I'm on my way out right now to give this a try.

I will post any swearing I do later.

There doesn't seem to be enough room to shove the wiring harness down the steering column. What now?

There is space, you must have the connector turned sideways adn you can tuck it through with a long skinny screwdriver.

Okay.Whew. Got the wire through. For those of you who have not done this, losen the four bolts holding the steering column to the the dash, and push up on the column and you will create space to slide the harness and plug through. This part is not fun.

Also, there is a small piece that will fall out from the left side when you disassemble the column shell. Pay special attention to the location of this piece so you know how to put it back in. It links the wiper switch assembly to the dimmer switch push rod.

Last, but not least, There is a small modular piece on the right side with contacts on it that you have to remove in order to get to the screw that holds in the ignition (it just slides out). DONT forget to put it back in.

Hopefully this will help others avoid repeatedly taking the assembly apart again and again like I did.

This is a job best done with the column removed from the car.

I had to replace the sector and gear in my column and it took about 45 minutes with the column out of the car.

If you have a tilt column, tilt it all the way up, you get much more room to pull the wires through.
