Have read and heard that some?? of these
crate engines, have a casting flaw that will make it use a lot of oil??
How to tell if this is the case for one you might purchase???
Thanks

You buy the engine, install it correctly, monitor oil consumption. If it is high, remove it and send it back.

Unless you have x-ray vision or are Carnack, the magnificent, I know of no way to tell if the engine has this flaw.

It is like buying a new car, how do you know ahead of time that you bought a lemon.

It is 20-20 hindsight.

There was someone on here who bought a crate engine and the exact same thing happened. When he went to return it, they voided his warranty. Reason is the crate engine is set-up for a carb and RWD and he told them he used it in a Fiero (FWD configuration) and used fuel injection. The dealers reasons for voiding the warranty was he used F/I, mounted in transversely, and modified the engine block. (drilled other side for the starter).

You could probably find it by doing a search for crate 3.4L.

Didn't that thread also say that Ed Parks was getting motors from a remanufacturer that could test the engines and weed out the bad ones? I believe they were also honoring their warrenty with installation in the Fiero when the motor was purchased thru Ed Parks. It sounded like the best way to get around the potential of GM not honoring their warrenty.
