I have a 86 Fiero SE, and have the same cassette player that came with the car when it was first bought. I just bought this car about a month ago. The cassette player worked ok when I first bought the car but now when I put a tape it it makes a clicking noise about every second and there is no sound. I am trying to get it to work so I can use this cassette to cd thing I just bought. Im supposed to be able to hook a tape up to my portable CD player in the headphone jack and put the tape in and push play on the CD player and it will work. Anyone else here have one of those?

Oh yeah another problem I have with my stereo is that sometimes usually when I first crank the car up the sound is very low, and then all of the sudden it gets normal. Anyone know what this might be?

You most likely have a broken belt on the cassette player.. the Fiero Store has replacements with instructions on how to..

when ever you hear that click, it means the tape is stopped and it is clicking over to the other side. Sometimes ,either you get something in the wheels , or the tape you have in doesnt move. (there for ,all it does is switch from side a to side b, click, click, click, etc..lol)id take it apart and clean the inside of it and make sure there isnt something in it. then Id check the tape you are putting in it. If the tape moves, its in the radio. The belt has to working in order for it to recognize the "end of tape command" to switch to the other side.it relys on tension. I hope you get it working, everyone needs cruisin music!

How hard would it be to just swap in a newer radio/cassette or CD from something like a late-model Grand Am? Are the connectors, etc, the same?

It's a relatively minor thing to swap in a newer unit. The plugs do not match but there are adapters available that go from the old style plug on the Fiero to the new style used on the newer radios.
